From my own experience, I’ve learned that waiting around for a salary increase without changing anything in your approach just doesn’t work. If your only focus is “I want them to pay me more,” let me tell you, nothing will happen on its own.

The first thing you need to understand is this: if you’re employed, it’s because you know how to do something. You have a specific skill that adds value to the company. But being paid more requires you to expand that value. Here are a few things I’ve done (and seen others do) that actually work.

1. Analyze what you’re doing right now.
Ask yourself: How can I improve my current work? What could I learn or study that would make me better at it? That’s often the first step toward proving you deserve more.

2. Stay in a constant learning mindset.
As professionals, we should never stop learning. Your field evolves, tools evolve, industries evolve, and if you don’t keep up, you fall behind. Continuous learning keeps you relevant.

3. Talk to your manager.
Conversations open doors. Ask your manager how your performance has been over the last quarter, six months, or even the last year. Ask if they see areas for improvement. That kind of feedback gives you a clear map of what you could do to have a bigger impact at work.

4. Share skills beyond your job description.
Sometimes, you’re good at something that your role doesn’t require, but that could benefit the team or company. Don’t keep it to yourself. When you bring extra value to the table, people notice.

5. Learn from your teammates.
Take the time to ask your colleagues what they do daily. You might find opportunities to collaborate, improve processes, or even discover a new area you’d like to grow into. That’s how career shifts and growth often happen, by stepping outside your comfort zone.

At the end of the day, if you limit yourself only to what your job description says, you’ll also limit your professional growth. Be curious, explore opportunities, and keep improving, without ever neglecting your main responsibilities. That’s how you make yourself stand out and open the door for raises, promotions, and growth.
